It's October and you are probably well into your routine and doubling down on teaching all the necessary content for your students to be successful. Our primary school students need the BASICS! In reading at this time of the school year, the basics are identifying letters and sounds. By first grade, most of my students are fluent with consonant sounds but need more reinforcement with short vowel sounds. I use stories with word families, sing many short vowel songs, and use decodable passages with short vowel word families.
